M Sasek

sasekContinuing with the ‘inspired by a comment elsewhere on this blog’ theme started by John (not to mention the former Communist Bloc and global exposure themes…), here’s some wonderful Miroslav Sasek. Thanks to Sarah for pointing out how overlooked the Prague born illustrator is, despite the wide proliferation of his stunning ‘This Is..’ book series. Not just for kids, this. We could all learn a lot from the former Czech architecture student…

Sasek’s ‘This Is…’ books are absolutely fabulous. His sense of Layout, color and design astounds me every time I look at his work.

There were (there are) a number of great illustrators in the former “East Bloc” countries. When I was a child I used to watch what they called “European Cartoons”, which were silent (or almost silent) short cartoon movies imported from Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia and so on, and used as filler in the tv schedule for children. Considering that was in Franco’s dictatorship era I suppose the reason of these imports was cheapness! Well, I digress, but I remember some incredibly creative illustration in these cartoons. It would be nice is somebody coul pint to some book, website or whatever material documenting these wonderfully creative illustrations and cartoons.
