Wonderful Illos of Oz
L. Frank Baum’s classic Oz writings have always attracted great illustrators, from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz’s W.W. Denslow, on to the man who pictured the rest of the series, John R. Neill, and beyond to the terribly underrated cartoonist Walt McDougall, who collaborated with Baum on the Queer Visitors From The Marvelous Land Of Oz Sunday comic strip (and whom Baum said most accurately captured the way he himself imagined the characters ought to look). There continues to be an unending parade of re-illustrated Oz books, many of which are quite beautiful. The image at left is by Harry McNaught, from the 1952 Little Golden Book adaptation of The Tin Woodman Of Oz– one of my personal favorites.

There’s a great illustrated version by Barry Moser. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have any images of it up at his site: http://www.moser-pennyroyal.com/.
Jay, you are my hero. Great find!
Thank you for sharing! :-)
Been telling my oldest daughter the story of The Wizard of Oz… she’ll love to see it come to life in these pix!
