Big-Eyed Keane

keane big eyesWith the past two posts, are you creeped out yet? How about a good dose of Margaret Keane, the queen of the kitschy big eye paintings. There was a gallery of her work in San Francisco, but has since been closed for about 3 years. No word on whether or not she’s still doing her thing. Most of what you’ll see on the link are post-60’s work, but all still possess her trademarked big, captivating eyes.

Interesting tidbit of info: Margaret sued her husband, Walter, for taking credit for all the paintings, and eventually won the case after proving to the jury that she was indeed the artist by actually painting an oil painting right there in court. Her husband refused to do a painting, stating that he had a “sore shoulder.” Margaret divorced Walter and moved to California to continue her career.

It's mind-boggling to know that these type of paintings were very popular at one point. Bizarre.

I love these paintings though. The eyes catch your own eyes...they make you stare out as if you were reaching out to them, in my own oppinion? I really like it...maybe it's just because I love olden stuff from the 60's. heh heh...not that I AM 60 or anything...geez...I'm like 15...heh...not the point. I love the work

Those Eyes Seem to tell a story of sorrow and pain and disappointment to me.... They are quite rare. This is an inspirational painting to me, in the sense that even though you have hard times in life, there's always someone who is worse off than you are
  • Here is the most wonderous painting in the entire Keane ouvre: Her commissioned portrait of Jerry Lewis and his family. It doesn't get much spookier than this:

Found this site on "Neat Stuff" on the net. Regarding M. Keane. M. challenged W. to a paint-off in Union Square in SF. Walter refused. Margaret moved to Hawaii and married the sports writer Dan McGuire. He did she became heavily involved with the Jehova's Witnesses as did her daughter. M.moved back to SFO. Sorry to hear her gallery closed. Her brother, last I heard, still lives in Honolulu.

Don't let your light go out.

    Warmest regards,

    Cosmio

Hey all--great news for Keane afficionados!

I just emailed the Gallery, and heard back immediately; the proprietor, Robert Brown, told me he reopened the gallery next door to the old location almost two years ago-and it's still open. He suggested I give him a call next time I'm up there and come on by, which I most certainly will.

Keane's work is one of those love/hate kinds of things...right now, I,love it-perhaps for the strangeness factor, maybe a bit of nostalgia...but there's something there in her best paintings, no doubt about it.

I found one of these at a thrift store for only 99 cents. I wonder if its worth some money.
