Robots are indeed way cool. Here are some books I recently purchased on the subject. You will find Brian Despain in Spectrum 11, a great reference collection of today's sci-fi illustrators. There two two pics of Brian's Pisces Ex Machina in this great tome.

He's like James Christiansen without as many fairys, goblins, and princesses and more robots, cigarettes, and household objects.

yay - you posted the link! i love brian's work....especially his robots. they are amazing. i love the stories behind them. one of the things i think is so cool about his work is his technique. it's so incredibly tight that you'd never know that it's done in Painter. it really looks like it was done in oil. amazing and very cool (!). for more: http://www.imphead.com/about/blendboywip/bb1.html

Hmm. I'm not sure who came first, but all I could think of when I saw that jar-headed robot was the work of San Francisco artist Damon Soule (http://www.damonsoule.com/) aka D23. Jar-headed half-robots are a consistent theme in his earlier work (see his paintings from '97 to 2001 for lots of examples!)
