Os Gemeos

Os Gemeos

Meet Os Gemeos (“The Twins”), two brothers from São Paulo, Brazil. They’ve got quite a different style from the typical b-boy, hip-hop graffiti characters that you might be used to. And that’s precisely why I dig their work. Os Gemeos have been painting since the late-80’s, but didn’t really take off until a well-known graffiti magazine did a spread on them in 1999. Now, they’ve traveled all over the globe, painting their stylized characters with ornate patterns and visual tricks. Check out a recent interview with them here. An earlier interview (1999) with the twins can be found here.

  • Some shameless promotion for a new book called "Graffiti Brasil" coming soon - more inspiration from Os Gemeos and many others from the highly original scene coming out of Brasil - www.graffitibrasil.com
  • I really dig their work. I live in Michigan and unfortunately have never seen any of their pieces in person. But I love what I've seen on the Internet. Do Os Gemeos have a website of their own?

There are some good photos of their work on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/osgemeos/clus....

This includes photos of a 130 foot mural outside a subway stop at Coney Island and some recent work in Brooklyn (better in person -- if you are lucky enough to be in the neighborhood).

Deitch has photos from their show earlier this year: http://www.deitch.com/projects/project_images.p...
  • That Juxtapoz story has some great pictures! Later in the magazine, you see them climbing a gallery wall.
  • great write up about them in juxtapoz a couple of issues ago.. and vapors also just did a follow up article about them (they were the one to write em up in the late 90's)
  • For sure one of the best street-art that I have ever seen. Great artwork, full of details and different styles and with political/social statement as well. Full-throtle!!
  • I've been a fan for a while. I used to see their stuff in 12 Oz. Prophet back in the day (especially that issue where they had the cover story). Amazing work.

i was in cuba this march and saw one of their commissioned pieces in downtown old havana. my girlfriend and i were shocked at the intricate detail and the fact that cuba doesn't have too much or if any urban style art.
