A quoi ça sert l’amour?

A quoi ça sert l’amour? is a charming animation by French production house Cube about the trials and tribulations of love set to the tune of a wonderful duet between Edith Piaf and Theo Sarapo. This short is but one of several (mostly commercial) animations on the site…

  • Justin
    Edith Piaf.

    Rice Pilaf.
  • oops! Ha ha! Guess I had food on the brain...
  • :)

The "gas" commercials, with that little bird that looks like a red version of "For The Birds" short animation, are very cute.
  • Oh, I forgot to thank you Bibi for this link!
  • This music video was made by a very good friend of mine Louis Clichy. He did this all by himself, Animation, editing, etc. it took him 6 months to complete the whole stuff. The drawings has been made into photoshop and everything was edited in After-effects.
It's a wonderful movie, obviously it's better if you understand French... ;-)
  • Hi bannister, please send the congratulations to them. I loved the animation, is wonderful, and je parle un peu de français. :)

    -----------------------------

No problem Johnny, I'm glad that you liked it. I had to spread this video!
  • Great great film. I loved it! Excellent linework and impeccable timing in the animation. Can anyone out there find the lyrics to this song -- in English, of course? I'd love to be in the know, too!
  • here is a "google translation" of the song.

With what that is used, love?
    One always tells
    Foolish stories
With what that is used to like?

    The love is not explained!
It is a thing like that!
Who comes one does not know from where
    And takes to you suddenly.

    Me, I intended to say
    That the love makes suffer,
    That the love makes cry,
With what that is used to like?

Is the love, that used for what?
With us to give of the joy
    With tears with the eyes...
    They is sad and marvellous!

    However one often says
    That the love is disappointing
That there is one on two
    Who is never happy...

    Even when it was lost
    The love which one knew
You a taste of honey leaves -
    The love it is eternal!

All that it is very pretty,
    But when all is finished
    There remain to you nothing
    That an immense sorrow...

    All that now
    Te seems tearing
    Tomorrow, will be for you
    A memory of joy!

All things considered, if I included/understood,
    Without love in the life,
    Without its joys, its sorrows,
    One lived for nothing?

    Yes! Look at me!
With each time I believe in it!
And I would always believe in it...
That is used for that the love!

But you, you are the last!
But toi' you are the first!
    Before you nothing had there
    With you I am well!

It is you whom I wanted!
It is you whom I needed!
You that I would always like...
That is used for that the love!

Here's my own translation, a little less "Googly":

    TS:
    Ah, what use is love?
    You always hear
    silly stories,
What good is being in love?
    EP:
    Love cannot be expained,
    It's not like that,
    It comes out of nowhere
And hits you all at once.
    TS:
    As for me, I've heard
    That love brings suffering,
    That love makss you cry,
What good is being in love?
    EP:
    What good is love?
    It brings you joy
    With tears in your eyes...
    It's sad and wonderful!
    TS:
    However people always say
    That love is deceiving
    That one of the two
    Is never happy...
    EP:
But even when one has lost it,
A love that one has known
Leaves you with a taste of honey -
    Love is eternal!
    TS:
    All this is very pretty,
But when all is said and done,
    You're left with nothing
    But an immense sorrow...
    EP:
But all that seems to be
    Tearing you apart right now
    Will become a
    Joyful memory tomorrow.
    TS:
So essentially, if I understand correctly,
    Without love in your live,
Without its joys and its sorrows,
There is nothing to live for?
    EP:
    Of course! Look at me!
I've believed it it every time!
And I will believe in it forever...
    That's what love is for!

As for you, you are the last!
As for you, you are the first!
Before I had you, I had nothing,
    With you I am complete.

    You're what I want!
    You're what I need!
You're the one I will always love..
    That's what love is for!

    Hi Bannister,

please, congratulate Louis Clichy and the guys from Cube for me, too! I loved the movie and I have been playing it from time to time in the last few days :)

And, Steve, you have just answered the prayers of a frustrated English speaker, hopless with French but in love with this song ;)))

    Thank you!

A quoi ç¡ sert lÂ’amour? is a beautiful little animation by the French animation studio Cube. It follows the rocky relationship of a stick figure couple set against a jazzy song.

    hey Bannister,

I came across this film a few weeks back. Please convey to your good friend Louis that I'm totally in love with this film. I see it couple of times a day and its touching as well as entertaining. I've also seen a few of his other films and am totally in awe of his works.
Someday I'd like to thank and congratulate him personally.
    Cheers

Thankyou Steve for the translation too.
