Drawing with the beasts

We don’t post a lot of technical or scientific illustration here on Drawn!, so this is a welcome change: Carl Buell is a paleo-wildlife artist. His blog is more than just a showcase for his work, as this mastadon Columbian Mammoth illustrates — he’s glad to share his process. I’m constantly amazed that people can paint using Photoshop. For more from “Olduvai George”, here’s an interview.

Amazed people can paint in Photoshop? :( Someone buy this guy a tablet ;)
  • I've got a tablet, thank-you... But can YOU paint a mammoth in Photoshop with a tablet that looks like this? The man has talent.
  • I just painted a pachyderm with a tablet. Granted it's FAR cartoonier than his uber-detailed specimen. I tend to work a lot better with digital paints than their real-world equivalents. Undo is king!

The link in my post'll take you to it if you're curious.
  • Wow! His animals are more than breathtaking, but... Did u see the landscape ? Ammmmmmazing !

Very nice of him to share his technique.
  • Very impressive.
I own a several Wacom tablets, but I'll admit that I've been hesitant to use them for the more detailed projects---the step-by-step exercises (ex. the mammoth) are very inspiring.

  • In my opinion I would lean towards agreeing on that. Of course that is just my opinion only. Freedom of speech is nice though :-)
  • I agree with Stefano on that one. Very impressive indeed and love the step by step process
