Randy Glass, stippler

Best known for his Wall Street Journal portraits, the illustrations of Randy Glass — using the labour-intensive method of stippling — are one of a kind. The likenesses are dead on, but his portfolio doesn’t just stop at portraits; his food and product renderings are equally as impressive.

  • Wow. Saying he's good is quite clearly an understatement. Damn.
  • Not only likeness, but also dead-on with personality.

Nice, that Randy is getting the props he deserves! He's a real nice guy to boot! Randy, if you read this, are you still buying pen nibs from Carter? Cheers!

Who are the other handful of WSJ stipplers?

Its very interesting to see the multiple takes on the same subject, as well as the individual artistry shining through a house style, equally remarkable for serving the style without breaking it (making it noticeable to the casual observer that there is more than one mind/hand at work.
  • Does Randy freehand? or does he trace like novak?
  • Thanks Drawn for spotlighting his amazing body of work.

Wow. I always thought that was a Photoshop plugin. OMFG this man is talented.
  • I met Randy when he spent a short year at Art Center College of Design. He helped make my career as an art director with his wonderful renderings. If you want to see more, you should check out his website

I just found this stream. My dad is Kevin Sprouls. http://www.sprouls.com He created the portrait style that the Wall Street Journal uses. The journal calls the stipple portraits hedcuts and I have spent my life watching him dot away to pay the bills - lately, my tuition. He is good friends with many of the artists who continue to work for the journal. Hai Knafo, Laura Levy, Harry Bates. Some other artists who he trained before leaving to freelance at home are Posy Webber and Barbara Kelly and Richard Baratz. They also freelance now. I remember hearing Randy Glass's name mentioned around the house, especially when the new edition of The Workbook http://workbook.com/assignment/results.lasso?sI... or the Showcase http://web.showcase.com/personalshowcase.asp?id... or http://web.showcase.com/workinshowcase.asp?pers... new ads in books were released. Its amazing how much has changed with the internet.
Mr. Glass's work in these books was always reviewed for its strengths, and of course possible competitive issues. I just wanted Mr. Glass to know that we, the Sprouls family have been admirers for as long as I can remember.
