Saturday in the Park with Friends

On July 1st, the community of Beloit, Wisconsin came together on the banks of the Rock River to recreate George Seurat’s “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte” with the help of photography. “Saturday in the Park with Friends”. Read about it at the Beloit Daily News, and see the results in this Flickr set.

Because of Drawn !, I wrote an article about Seurat and Beloit in "La Boîte à Images" ("The Images Box").
    In French, sorry :-)

  • They do this in Cocoa Beach, Fla., as well. A friend of mine always participates. I believe they even call it "Sunday In the Park." There's also a play of the same name, inspired by the same painting.
  • I grew up in Beloit and don't remember neat things like this happening when I lived there. I do remember watching boat races from where those people are posing, if it's where I think it is. Pretty cool in any case.
  • I love it! Great idea! I wish my community would come together creatively like that!

Ah! La Grande Jatte. Never ceases to inspire. I had a go at Seurat using George Hardie's axonometric idea combined with the dots of RGB (in this screen version) or the dots of offset-printing CMYK (in the printed poster version).

That very cool. I wish the composition and dress were more exact but for a bunch of people just coming together to imitate the painting its great :).

There's a restaurant in Austin called Hickory Street Bar and Grille; they did a similar deal with a photo based on Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party" - it cracked me up when I first saw it.
