FreeJack: Odd Job Jack and Creative Commons

In a world where even the slightest hint of copyright violation brings out the lawyers, this is a refreshing twist… The creators of the Canadian animated series Odd Job Jack are releasing the master Flash files and bitmaps of every piece of art used in this season of the show: every character, prop, and background from every episode plus tutorials and other support material, all free to hack, use, remix under a share-friendly license.

The first episode’s torrent is 800 megs. (Download)

They are releasing 1 per week for 13 weeks. You can find out more and browse the assets at FreeJack.

  1. [...] One of my regular stops every morning is Drawn – it’s a great stop for anyone interested in animation, illustration and so on. I’ll often reference it at my other site but as it mostly highlights other sites, sometimes I don’t mention it enough. There are days where I could almost just copy them completely because they are that interesting. Anyway, today they had a post about how the creators of animated series Odd Job Jack are releasing the master flash files and bitmaps of every piece of art used – free to hack, use and remix. Every Monday during the 13 week run they will release the files under a creative commons license. Considering how often solicitor’s letters are fired out at the slightest hint of a copyright violation, it is a pretty refreshing move. [...]

That is absolutely great…if only more animators were this open and understanding of the give and take aspects of media. More power to them!

i got all of the files finally (it took several tries). the only downside to it all is that i can not locate the master file that controls the elements (if it is included at all). yes, having all of the visual parts is a great resource but i would much rather have the master control FLA file and the audio to go with it.

hopefully the next download will have that included in the torrent.

Torrent for episode 302 is now up and seeding with a very high speed connection:

The master control file(s) will not be included. This is because of lots of things. The biggest hurdles are that we don’t own the internet rights to the vocal performances and our rendering system is very complex and can’t be reproduced outside of our lan.
