Gez Fry

gez fry

Warning: Gez Fry is painfully good. For me, looking at his Japanese-influenced commercial illustration was two parts intimidation and one part inspiration.

He says in a PingMag interview,

My original plan was to be a diplomat … but I realized that I then could only be living in Japan for four years. I really wanted to be in Japan with my future wife and thought that freelancing in art would allow me to live wherever I want.

I agree, great color and every line is razor clean. It almost strikes me as a mature form of anime, a 50/50+- blend of realism and cartoon. Hes worked for some cool people too.
  • I also agree. His style is excellent, fresh and superbly drafted.
  • whoa! good call on the 2 parts intimidating. i'm gonna go draw now!
  • hi,
just checked out your website and its shit hot. http://www.thehairyimaje.co.uk this is my site. would love some feedback from you.

cheers, keep up the good work

Wow! What a great post. After the post about photorealistic vector art, here's a story that gives us all hope. It proves the old axiom that if you do what you love, know how to market yourself and most importantly DON'T GIVE UP, you will catch a break. As a working artist who has done so much work for a living that was essential and yet not creative, the anime/manga style was like a bath of cold water for me. Immersing myself in that style made me want to draw again.
  • Been a longtime fan myself.

That's my fav. Composition, colour balance - all perfect.

You're spot on Tricia, I wish I could get paid to do this kind of stuff 24/7, instead of crap that pays the bills.

It is intimidating in a way, but it does inspire you to wanna get down and draw your ass off. It's been way too long since I sat down and drew just for the love of it, not to please some client who thinks this stuff comes easy anyway.

Thanks Gez. Your work rocks. Thanks for reminding me why I got into this gig.
  • Got-damn, he's good! He's one of those guys that makes me wonder why I bother doing what I do; a feeling that eventually subsides, but happens nonetheless. :)
It's like, everything has a place in his work. All the folds, areas of light, texture...it's all supposed to be there. There's nothing extraneous in his work, even his looser pieces. Damn. Intimidating and inspiring at the same time.

Ah, there's nothing like a vehement ass kick on a lazy sunday afternoon.

How about that for some mild artist depression.

*Note to self - MUST sketch more for the love.

    Hey Jamie,

Looked at your site. I agree with everyone here that your work is intimidating AND inspirational. Pure genius! I love the Messy Kids and the cowboys. WOW. I love your style and the fact you iincluded sketches. It's great to see an artist's process. Yes, I got my ass kicked for sure. Keep up the great work!

  • The interview in PingMag is amazing.
  • The interview in PingMag es amazing.
  • I saw this guys work a few years back and tracked him down to Folio art agency (http://www.folioart.co.uk/). I commissioned him to do a couple of covers for the mag I designed at the time - .net. He produced some stunninbg images for me - highly rated.
  • Gez Fry handles the female form so beautifully. I can't get enough of the "Hot Version" work - soo elegant in colour & line. Is anyone else reminded of Ralph Bakshi (Elinore the fairy in "Wizards")?
