Johnny Yanok

Johnny Yanok. Do you know that name? You should. After leaving American Greetings a year ago, he has been kept busy as a fulltime freelance illustrator, toiling in the realms of children’s publishing, advertising, and editorial work. On top of all of this, Johnny has also been showing more of his fantastic paintings in galleries, including an upcoming show at Roq La Rue in November. Read more about Johnny from the man himself in this interview from 2005.

  • It's all good, man.
  • No worries Richard!
    :D
  • Richard
Truly, it's not my intention to be ungenerous, Jared, Ward.
  • Aqua
    Kevin,

I am laughing so hard I think I peed.
  • ...also I think "Edward" is a "Richard".
  • Johnny is a stupid poostain on the underwear of humanity and he smells like yesterday's coleslaw... that's why he paints so gosh-dang good. He HAS to in order to get people to associate with him.

...plus, he never stops talking. Blah, blah, blah. I mean, com on already! let someone else get a word in occasionally. Geez!

...oh, and "Richard" seems rather appropriately named... get it? Hah! Weiner jokes are funny.

    Love you Johnny. xxxooo
  • Me too, Jared.

Funny, Richard, we gave praise to you last year and you didn't seem to mind.

It's all a matter of taste and opinion. We're all entitled to that. We really appreciate the comments here on Drawn! but if it gets to the point of consistent negativity, then what's the use? Drawn! is a site that features artists and work that we, the contributors feel are inspiring. If you don't agree with us, that's fine. It's meant as a positive thing and we enjoy sharing our links to give attention to artists who deserve it. But if you're going to poo-poo our opinions and tastes, then all I have to say is, you don't have to be here. Nobody's forcing you to like what we like.
  • Thanks for posting your comments and sharing your thoughts Edward and Richard. As for "gushing praise lavished on Mr Yanok", it is simply because I really like his work. Plain and simple.
  • Richard
Judging by other comments that he's left in the past, I'm sure that it's simply Edward Simpson's intention to lob a grenade into the all too cosy, backslapping world of Drawn. You'll be lucky, Aqua, if he offers anything by way of an explanation

Whilst I have no wish to be as provocative and offhand as Mr Simpson I have to say that the gushing praise lavished on Mr Yanok here seems disproportionate to the work that's on show. It's an attractively rendered pastiche of 50s/ 60s cartoons done with no greater wit or aplomb than umpteen animators and illustrators I could mention.
  • Well, obviously, Mr. Edward Simpson is holed up in his basement creating something that will revolutionize illustration and comics as a whole and make us all realize what idiots we are for not acknowledging his brillance. And "mediocrite" will be banished forever!
  • Aqua
    Edward,

I am sure all of us are waiting for you to explain why everything is "drawn mediocrite" on this site.

Obviously you have an opinion. The question that remains is why you have this opinion?

Pray tell, what is mediocre about this fine artist?
  • Edward Simpson
another yawn er i mean drawn mediocrite.
  • Oh! Chris! Man, that's really cool... you ARE lucky!
  • Luc
Super super super love Yanok's work.
  • CMR
I'm lucky enough to have a Johnny Yanok original on the wall of my Daughter's room: http://www.bigistudio.com/images/news_images/bi...

    LUCKYYYYY :)
  • I know! Yes, he is amazing... I have a theory that Johnny was created by the government... sort of a super-art-robot-experiment of sorts... of coarse I didn't include that in the post. I don't want to come across as strange, you know. ;)
To be honest, I came across Johnny's stuff a long time ago, but held off on posting him for my own selfish reasons. He's fantastic.
  • My goodness! What a find, Jared! Johnny's stuff is amazing. I love it. Looks like he's been tapping into the Retro Kid pool, and then some!
  • Okay, he's got a new fan in me. That Akron, Ohio piece reminds me of the Black Keys' Rubber Factory. Man, it'd be awesome if they sought him out for future album artwork.
  • Wonderful art, Johnny! "The Cat with Two Heads" reminds me of a song from the Aquabats called...."The Cat with Two Heads".
  • CMR
