Kids books from 1920s Japan

Visit this fascinating gallery of images from children’s books from Japan in the 1920s. It’s interesting to see a range of styles that I don’t associate with that time period simply because I haven’t been exposed to children’s books from that time period in Japan. I’m also surprised at how contemporary some of the images seem to loook.

  • The artwork is awesome! And so unexpected: some of the illustrations give the impression of having been made in the 50s or 60s, not the 20s.
  • I've gotten to the part where there's what looks to be a book entirely done in sillouettes. Wow. This stuff is really ahead of its time.
