Comics and Information Design

Scott McCloud’s book, Understanding Comics, is well-loved in the comics community for its entertaining explanation of the comics medium; but, in an interesting twist, McCloud is also garnering praise from web developers for the way he describes how to convey information visually.

Here, the design and usability blog, Signal vs. Noise, reviews McCloud’s work and how it can benefit web designers and information architects in their own fields. I love how Jason Fried is always looking at the big picture. It’s a really cool interdisciplinary analysis with additional links to more resources on comics and information design.

This relationship was also discussed in this previously blogged radio interview with McCloud.

The first time I read McCloud's book was in a theatre semiotics course, and again in media studies graduate courses. It really works well as a baseline text for discussion of how a medium is used to communicate. Read it and then Adolphe Appia, Patrice Pavis, de Saussere, Shannon and Weaver, etc--they're talking about the same thing, just applied different media.
