The Art of the Inked Line: Hank Ketcham

I think the quality of Hank Ketcham’s inked lines are unparalleled, so it was great to see a collection of his images over at Leif Peng’s astounding Today’s Inspiration blog. Included in the post of images is a great excerpt from The Merchant of Dennis in which Ketcham describes getting a lesson in using a pen from Noel Sickles:

Sickles handed me the pen. “Here, give it a whirl. It’s not only fun to be freewheeeling, but you’ll discover a few new wrinkles and, more importantly, you’ll know the outer limits of the pen’s performance and not be afraid to vacillate between a lacy thin line and a gutsy swath that looks like a bold brush stroke.”

  • I've been falling in love with Hank Ketchum allover again with the new Complete Dennis The Menace series of hardbacks from Fantagraphics. Great stuff. He has such a fluid, but precise lyrical line. Nothing ever seems like an accident, but there's still such a vitality in the lines he makes.
  • Perhaps it's worth mentioning this book which is coming out in a couple months.
