Yuka Yamaguchi

I’ve been absent this past week and a bit because I was in Saskatoon for a big conference, where I gave a paper on the impact of illustrators’ networks on visual communication. Bart Beaty, the European comics expert from Calgary, was there and gave a paper too. Anyways, I went by the Mendel Art Gallery, a place that I thought has always done a superb job of balancing local and nonlocal art. And there was this fabulous exhibition of drawings by Yuka Yamaguchi. For me, they transcend the merely weird-for-weird’s-sake because of the personal and heartfelt texts she sometimes provides for these pieces. This one only says “me and my hard-working proxy”, but current ones are inspired by her pregnancy, for instance.

  • Hi Yuka,

Thanks for the heads-up. Fixed now.

wow, thanks for the mention. glad you enjoyed my show. the mendel gallery extended it until june 11th -- come and see it if you can.

by the way, the link on my name in this post is broken. my blog is www.plastiquemonkey.com and my gallery is www.plastiquemonkey.com/gallery/ . see you around!
  • Yay Yuka, she's super sweet.
  • Agreed, some of her stuff is kinda creepy, but still cutesy. Huh.

I really love Yuka's work. I agree, she makes so much more out of "gross-out" images... (although her work is undeniably and wonderfully weird.) I like her fishes.

Make sure to check her wip shots on her flickr site-- it's neat to see how she gradually lays down the color.
