Funerary ArtAn Egyptian tour site has a wonderful gallery of Roman era funerary portrait art. The variety of images and unique faces more than make up for the lack of context or information on the site.
Seen here, a dead ringer for the guy who fixed my transmission last week.

  • The site is pretty stingy with supporting information... but the images are great- the faces are so common, and the handling of the brushwork is so familiar, that it's hard to believe the period of the paintings is so remote.
  • The paintings feel so realistic, and the folks look so contemporary and alive.
  • I saw some originals at the reopened Getty Villa. Amazing stuff!
  • More Art History in drawn!! Puts things in perspective. awesome.
