I knew the Soviets were into the space race. These Christmas cards show how much so. Not a reindeer in site just rockets, jets and missiles for Russian Santa.

Almost every card says “Happy New Year” as opposed to Merry Christmas. Interesting

    You stupid lamers.

The Soviets were not only into space race:) The first man in space was Russian, you know? Yuri Gagarin, April 12, 1961. Just FYI.

Also, there was no Christmas in Soviet culture as in Jewish or Muslim. USSR was populated with many ethnic groups not only Christians. Religious holidays were personal business of those who want to celebrate them. And among the civil (not political) Soviet holidays the #1 was New Year. The New year is what unites all, not divides.

The text of this card really means “HAPPY NEW YEAR”. No politically correct “happy winter holidays”. A real holiday which is not, and never was political. This is our tradition. Every year, on December 31, Russians go to bathhouse (do you know what is bathhouse?) We drink there very mush, then go to airport and fly to St.Petersburg. Those who live in SpB have bath at home in all their clothes, then go out before 12 a.m. The rest are drinking Soviet champaign in their homes. Oh, those strange Russians…

Now about so called “Santa”. This is not Santa, this is Father Frost (FF) with his granddaughter. You now, FF is, political incorrectly… heterosexual! He even has descendants. And as for Santa… we only see him with several deers. Strange… i wouldn’t left him with my children for too long:(.

An interviewed with the owner of this collection, Boris Glazer, appears today on my blog. In the interview, Boris discusses the collection–explaining the subtle difference between New Years and Christmas cards in Old Soviet Russia–and showcases his favorite examples from his vast collection. The special post is in honor of Christmas Day 2007.
