Susan Bradley and Typography at Pixar

Thunder Chunky offers up an interview with Pixar title designer Susan Bradley. This choice quote, I think, can be applied to the typography of any creative pursuit, whether it be a website, graphic novel, or animated film:

Film titles certainly welcome you and wave goodbye in a very crucial and visceral way, but I don’t think they have much weight as it relates to “success”, unless that’s all the film has going for it. I think the biggest mistake is seeing the title sequence as separate from its film. In my opinion, they can do very much or very little; but really shine when they live within the story and reflect an important quality driven by your Director.

  1. I actually preferred the animation in the titling to the rest of the animation in ratatouille. I wish the whole movie had been animated that way!

  2. I stayed to the very end of the movie, thru the awesome credits! Ususally the movie credits tell the people the get
up and leave, but in ratatouille, the credits, art and typography was the icing or cherry on the cake. SO CREATIVE!
Susan and her ‘entourage’ (another french word) were/are
    tops!

Ditto what Jed said. I enjoyed Ratatouille, but once I saw those amazing animated sequences following the film, I left my heart in the entertaining credits. I thought the same thing: I would have LOVED the movie were it animated in the style shown AFTER the movie. It had such life and character, like the kind of animation I grew up on. Gawd I miss that kind of work.

The same style was used in the story books sold in stores. I think she’s done the story books for Nemo and Monsters and Incredibles, too. Check them out. I felt that I wanted to see them animated, too.
