MUTO by Blu

MUTO a wall-painted animation by BLU from blu on Vimeo.

Blu is a graffiti/street artist from Buenos Aires Bologna, Italy. His stuff is amazing. He recently finished a film combining two of my favorite things: graffiti and animation, titled “MUTO.” I’m blown away by it. Unbelievable.

On his Youtube, he’s posted some other animated experiments, if you’re curious. He has a blog, too.

UPDATE: Thanks to several readers, I’ve now updated where Blu’s from. (Sorry about that — there wasn’t much info the guy when I hastily typed up this post earlier.) Also, Lorenzo Fonda wrote to tell me this:

“…I’m currently finishing a documentary film about a trip i took with [Blu] in Latin America. For details you can go here: www.megunica.org. We will also print a book of the sketchbook he and me kept during the trip.

ciao!

lorenzo”

Thanks, Lorenzo, for the update!

(Thanks, Trevor!)

Nice find. I’d already seen the final part, but not the first part in the streets. Really nice! He uses the same technique of William Kentridge.
Bytheway I must correct you, ..he’s not from Buenos Aires, Blu is italian! ;)

  3. blu is not from buenos aires, he’s an italian street artist.

I’ve always been fascinated by his larger than life pieces but this is too much! The freshness of this almost improvised story is fantastic. Bravo Blu!

This owes a little something to William Kentridge ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kentridge ) and Jan Svankmajer ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaMIR7uRTLo ), but it really does transcend those influences. The scale alone is stunning, and it all looks fantastic!

hi! just let me correct you again. BLU is not from Bologna, he is from Senigallia (a small town near Ancona, center of ITALY, east coast). I know this because he is friend of friends, and i’m from Ancona. ^_^ cheers

I’m going by what Lorenzo Fonda told me, and he’s worked with the guy. Thanks, though.

actually clearcut is right, he’s from senigallia. Bologna is where he’s been living for many years. i guess Bologna is just easier to locate in the map rather than a small sea town eheh..

    Absolutely amazing!

  11. Not too cool about the fact that he painted over a lot of other peoples artwork to do his.

One of the most refreshing-talented-free spirit piece of art I have laid my eyes upon.

    Applause!

suburbancowboy: that’s the nature of graffiti. I guarantee you that all of the guys whose work Blu went over totally and completely understood this. All graff writers know and understand that once you put your work up on walls that it’s fair game. Just gotta get used to it. The same goes for Blu, too. I’m sure that almost, if not, all of these walls here have been painted or tagged over by other writers.
