Watch: Chris Onstad interview
Chris Onstad, the artist and writer behind the hugely popular webcomic, Achewood, is interviewed in the Authors @ Google series. They talk about writing, monetization, parenthood, and Onstad’s new book, The Great Outdoor Fight.
Not a very enthousiastic group there. I much prefered the episode with Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie) and R. Stevens (Diesel Sweeties) Lots and lots of good info on webcomics, dynamic crowd, jokes and visual stimuli.
Never seen that comic, before. Gotta say, artistically – that’s some pretty lame stuff.
And some pretty blatant borrowing of Chris Ware’s useage and placement of type. Yawn.
bredlo, you heathen! Achewood is hands-down the best-written comic on the web with many well-respected publications naming it so: Time Magazine -#1 Graphic Novel of ‘07-, Cracked Magazine, Web Comics Choice Awards, Ignatz Awards, to name a few. Where you been, man?
And the art is somewhat incidental to the material and to write the whole thing off so quickly and brusquely insults your intellect. Give it a proper try and you’ll find yourself enthralled, I swear.
Honestly, the first few times I read Achewood, I was firmly on bredlo’s side. Thought it looked lame, etc. But. I was wrong. danwarning is correct; you gotta give it the ol’ college try, and you’ll then truly appreciate it. Like The Backstreet Boys.

A’ight, fellas. I’m nothing if not willing to learn to like new stuff. This *does* look like it’s gonna take some trying though…. so far it’s like Borat – I just don’t get it. ; )
I can completely relate. First time I read it, I couldn’t even make out what they were saying, but reading through the archives a couple of months later, it just clicked. It’s an awesome read ones you hit that point. I can imagine it not being all that for everyone thought. Hence the cult-status I guess.
I liked it for a long while, but then I just kinda stopped reading… It’s good, though. I just get tired of stuff :/
I haven’t read it in ages, but I do like the strip in which a number of the characters beat down the creator of Comic Sans.
