A quoi ca sert l’amour

I’ve watched this about ten times now, and it just keeps getting better. The minimalist animated short by Louis Clichy shows the power of being economical not just in one’s linework, but in storytelling and editing as well. All the potential fat is trimmed away and we’re left with a simple, charming, super tight piece of art and storytelling.

I like this a lot. The velocity of the piece keeps the story lively and the ambiguities trivial. Even though the plot points are not spelled out explicitly, you get the big picture quickly enough that you can fill in the blanks.

It’s simply amazing. The drawing, the storytelling and the direction: everything is perfect. Wonderful.

Still, it was definitely worth revisiting. Great stuff!
