Reach is a great little CG-animated film by Luke Randall. Randall is a director/animator based in Melbourne, Australia.

Opening bit with the kid’s hands reminded me a bit of Toy Story.

That was so beautiful! The melancholy and heartfelt emotion coming from the little bot touched me deeply. I hope it wins!
From the opening establishing shot Chris Ware’s influence is very apparent which is no discredit to Luke Randall. Most decent modern illustrators, artists and animators have fallen under the Acme spell, myself included. Chris Ware shouldn’t get a credit for style direction on this short but maybe he needs a mention for the story which has very distinct similarities with a small strip in one of his classic Novelty Library comics. The comic vignette in question depicts a miniature robot from Spaceman Sam I believe. Stripped of the dark humour of the original this animated short doesn’t hit home quite as powerfully as the comic. Although to be honest Spaceman Sam requires a very strong sense of nihilism to enjoy. Top marks for pace, animation and rendering though.
Well doen Luke! Very very nice indeed. The opening shots of the town and the story is very reminiscent of Chris Ware’s Rocket Sam stuff.
I forgot to mention the Chris Ware influence. In fact, the opening shot easily could have been from a 2D animation.
