Flight of the Mermaid – another beautiful book from Bhajju Shyam

Mermaidcover

Artist Bhajju Shyam – of the Gond tribe of India – returns this year with Flight of the Mermaid – a beautiful interpretation of Anderson’s classic mermaid story. The richness and depth of Shyam’s lineart patterns complement this undersea tale well. Careful: it’s darker than the Disney version – but still wonderfully suited for all ages.

Shyam’s handmade book, The Nightlife of Trees, was one of my favourite books last year and one of my favourite books on my bookshelf. I return to his stuff for inspiration over and over again.

There is an anime version of the little mermaid called Andersen Douwa Ningyo Hime in Japanese. I have the English version on VHS, and I didn't even realize that it was probably the first anime I'd ever watched. It's really close to Hans Christian Andersen's original story, so much sadder than the Disney version. Once you watch it, you can never go back to Disney's version ever again. It's too good.
