sonicoliver; Could you elaborate? I watched the trailer at your link – its a different film in a different style… from what I could gather its a different story line as well. Am I missing something?

  4. amped says:

no, you’re right Leif. tekkonkinkreet is a different movie. this teaser is something else, but i can see the similarities between them. like how both are about two brothers who at one point get separated. but it isn’t the same thing.

  5. Leif Peng says:

Aah, I see – thanks for clarifying, amped. :^)

I’ve been trying to find more info on Baidi but not much luck yet. I read some remarks on a forum that the French studio that released the teaser is trying to find investors to finance a 26 episode series. Could be wild speculation though…

as soon as i started the preview i thought…this is exactly like tekkonkinkuriito

yeah its a different style, and granted i haven’t seen anything more than this teaser. but…aside from the art direction, this seems to be insanely similar.

Really? I guess I really am missing something. From the untranslated clip sonicoliver provided tekkonkinkuriito seems to be about two brothers who are battling a bunch of bad ass (gangsters?) in a “real world’ scenario… the synopsis for Baidi is that a younger sister is separated from her older brother in the course of some magical event and he must battle his way through a fantasy world of strange creatures and landscapes to rescue her. Apart from the two story lines involving a younger and older sibling… what exactly is insanely similar about these two stories?

  8. this is spectactular.

it’s ridiculous to say this is a rip-off of matsumoto – mainly because the kid is wearing a hat and jumping over buildings. this is the direction a lot of contemporary japanese animation has been going for years now. looks like it’s been inspired also by the palette of other studio 4 degrees stuff (mindgame, etc).

    really spectactular.

  9. btw, after watching again i would say it’s equally inpired by Keita Takahashi’s (katamari) aesthetic.

  10. r. andrews says:

my comment probably came across as “how dare they copy matsumoto!!” i was more surprised by the fact that i wasn’t the only one who saw a similarity. i think it looks gorgeous, and something about it stirs up memories of tekkon for me and apparently others as well.

  11. I think the similarity with Tekkonkinkreet stems from the music also – very similar to Plaid’s brilliant OST.

  12. svengali says:

The comparison with Tekkon is not an insult. Based on the teaser, I think it merely suggests some passing conceptual similarities: dense urban settings, young, street smart characters, pervasive mystical aura, fantastic aerial gymnastics, etc.

If you’ve not seen Tekkonkinkreet, grab a copy and watch something transcendent.
