MAD caricaturist Tom Richmond has posted the first part of a series of “How to Draw Caricatures” tutorials on his blog. First up are the basics, a method of defining the unique geometry of one’s subjects using what Tom calls The Five Shapes. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this series. Tom’s blog is an invaluable resource of tips, tutorials, and insights.

Another Tom Richmond tutorial

MAD Magazine’s Tom Richmond offers up another juicy tutorial, this time on digital colouring: Part One, Part Two, Part Three. Pro users may not learn too much, but Tom’s nothing if not incredibly in-depth. He covers every detail of his colouring process no matter how seemingly inconsequential, never assuming anything of the reader. This makes it a great resource for students or those just learning the ins and outs of Photoshop. The tutorial covers everything from scanning the art right down to the last little highlight.

He even throws in a video this time:

Tom Richmond’s inking tutorial

Hot off the heels of his colouring tutorial (previously on Drawn!), MAD Magazine’s Tom Richmond offers up a wonderfully-detailed and thorough tutorial on how he inks one of his illustrations. He explains the tools he uses, the various types of inks, how he holds his pens, how he moves his arms, cross-hatching, solid blacks — you name it! He even drops a few secrets of some of the older generation of MAD artists like Mort Drucker and Jack Davis.
