vampireAm I the only one super excited about the upcoming releases by neophyte Graphic Novel publisher First Second? I’ve raved about French cartoonist Joann Sfar at least a couple of times, and it’s great to see these nice, thick volumes of his work available in english. First Second is translating some awesome Lewis Trondheim stuff, too. It all looks so delicious!

I confirm, this stuff is great(i’m french and I read some of those and many another stuffs Sfar and Tronhdeim did). Also, Trondheim got a weblog at this adress : http://www.lewistrondheim.com/blog/ and it’s a part of his website http://www.lewistrondheim.com. Unfortunately, it’s all french so if you’re not quiet good in this language, you may have many difficulties to read it.

Among the little good stuff that has been translated you can find the amazing work of Christophe Blain. Isaac the Pirate and The Speed Abater, both I believe, published in english by NBM ComicsLit.
    Here’s a link to Monsieur Blain’s page:

I’m excited about the line-up too. I think Mark Siegel’s great, and I’m really looking forward to the release of Derek’s new book. :)

Hey! Thanks for the vote of confidence! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the Vampire Loves one, and Sfar’s next with us (in the Fall) KLEZMER. And here’s a scoop for DRAWN! — speaking of Blain — we’re doing a brand new original work of his soon, called GUS, which will knock everyone’s socks off I think. It’s a crazy western on the surface, but underneath it’s all about love and romance of course, and in a vein that makes me think of Buster Keaton movies. And more Trondheim on the way, with in the meantime, his diaries appearing on the :01 blog. Some other Euros too (Gipi, and Riad Sattouf both brilliant) but also, a serious crop of homegrown US talent, on some really outstanding projects. Sara Varon, Paul Pope, Jessica Abel, Gene Yang, Brian Ralph, just to name a few. And Kazu (hey there!) mentioned Derek Kirk Kim, who is just as splendiforously talented as ever, and one of the most delightful people to work with. Hi HEALING HANDS is serializing as it appears at his website, but I’m sure you know that. Ok, what am I doing? I don’t have time for this!

I’m glad to see the English wil be able to enjoy the translated adventures of “Grand vampire”. I hope that edition won’t be butchered in any way, like the massive shrinking Trondheim and Larcenet’s “Cosmonautes du futur” went through when it was translated and edited as “Astronauts of the future”.

I bought this book from a book store once when I was visiting Quebec city, even though I can’t read french all that well. I agonised over the panels trying to dechipher there meanings, I got little bits and pieces though and still enjoyed it. Would love to get it in english. There’s a scene where he goes into a record store and Sfar I believe has modeled one of the patrons on Crumb!

Like Mark said, they’re going to publish also Gipi, the winner of this year’s Angouleme Festival (the oscar for the comic books). Don’t miss it!

Two great links with full bibliographies of two great comic artists whose many works are still largely untranslated.
