10 Ways Design Can Fight Climate Change

claudia-luz.jpg

A British design firm has released a design manifesto (PDF) for sustainable design. It’s a bit too much of a brochure for my taste, but it’s worth thinking about, so here`s a summary:

1. Re-think
2. Re-use
3. Use eco-friendly materials
4. Save energy
5. Share new ideas
6. Design to last
7. Stay local, buying ethical
8. Support what we believe
9. Inspire, have fun
10. Save money

Treehugger comments:

Perhaps the most important note about this manifesto, is the knowledge that there is something that they can do with every project, every client, every day, to lighten their footprint and help fight global warming. And that’s a lesson we can all take something from.

Also check out the Ten Commandments of Sustainable Design.

This also seems like the right time to mention Luz: Girl of the Knowing - a new webcomic from Claudia Dávila. Luz is an environmentally-conscious comic about a girl who is on a mission to gather “the knowing”: knowledge and experience about sustainable survival for humans, specifically in urban centers.

The linked Design manifesto is a very detailed, practical and useful guide. Climate change is real and it is man made. There is no doubt of that any more. We need urgent actions to cut the greenhouse gas emissions, and even if we manage to stabilize the emissions to sustainable level, the global temperature will go up 2-3 degrees Celsius.

If nothing is done and emissions grow current rate, the temperature will go up about 6-10 degrees. And the consequences of this kind of warming are unbearable.

The overwhelming majority of scientists is unanimous about man made global warming. There is a tiny group of lobbyists, who still deny the problem. The TV program that Arctic Luke mentioned in his comment is made by those climate change deniers. You will find their connections to ExxonMobil in a few seconds with Google, if you like.

Climate change is a complex and uncomfortable phenomenon. It is man made, so man can also do something about it. And as a cartoonists we can take a stand with our work.

-Many, many climatologists do not believe that climate change is being caused by man, including a number whose names were eroniously listed on the IPCC report; In fact, the names were not taken off until the scientists threatened legal action. They had, in fact, been asked to sign documents acknoweledging that they’d read the reports, not that they agreed with any consensus view.

-It is a fact that the political agenda had ben put in place by the UN long before the IPCC report magically confirmed the convenient necessity of the same political agenda.

The fact is, the real money in the world- that of tax-exempt foundations- directly funds the environmentalist lobbies and had a direct hand in creating the UN.The U.Ns’ stated mission is to regulate energy use world-wide. The CLUB OF ROME, which counted Al Gore as a member, as early as 1970, determined that the best way to push this agenda was to create a secularist apocalypse scenario, with man as the cause. First, it was a “global ice-age” that was bound to come and punish us for our sins against “Gaia”, and now we have an updated version, in which the very breath we exhale is the cause (anyone can check the graph used in Al Gores’ propoganda piece actually shows the rise in carbon follows the rise in temperature).

-These environmental groups, btw, were funded by foundations that came out of oil-wealth, specifically BP and Dutch Royal Shell. IF the UN can manage to regulate energy use world-wide, who do you think will get the “rights” to produce energy, shutting out any competition? Furthermore, the prices demanded could surely sky-rocket. We might even see energy being payed for in ownership stock of manufacturers. Imagine, a foriegn, un-elected body of gloablist “elites” coming into full regulatory control of the wealth of nations..
This is not to say that there are not real environmental concerns- of course there are, they just have nothing to do with “climate change”.
Either way, the issue of relationships to oil companies by those climatologists in the film – many who cannot find funding after being branded “deniers” (where have we heard that word before?) – is covered. There is none. Even if the filmakers do have such a relationship, even if “google” says its true, that criticism amounts to shooting the messenger; it has no bearing on the veracity of the claims the scientists featured make.

Watch the film. Decide for yourself. If there is anything to be weary of in our modern world, it’s a “consensus” thats being pushed down our throats as a “moral issue” which is “beyond debate” by the corporate, globalist media.

I think the link Arctic Luke provided is interesting, and something worth thinking about. Mostly because I think it’s good to be careful of any mass movement–it’s good to think for yourself, to ask questions of all sides. But I also think this is an interesting brochure with a lot of good things that can be applied and still help the world out and ourselves on very basic levels.

Maybe the words “climate change” should not be part of the heading. Something more broad might work better. I think “sustainable” is a great start. “…method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged”. Thanks Mr. Webster.

But “Climate Change” certainly gets the attention of folks pretty quickly in comparison! It’s useful, but it could be dangerous in other ways–even becoming something closer to negative propaganda. How do you get people to think about things on their own without going so totally specific? Now that’s a challenge!

In the end, a good question to ask is, does it hurt to care about the place we live in?

When I think about that, I do believe there is a place for environmentalism–caring about where we eat and sleep. I do think it’s a good idea apply some of these ideas to help make the spot of earth we live on a better place. We are indeed having an effect on our environment. All you do is have to take a walk around your neighborhood and see the waste we create and its effect on the neighborhood. Go to a local harbor and take note of the “no swimming”, “no fishing” signs. Just observe and take note and think.

I try to think of the practical things I can do, to improve my quality of living, and I believe it might help have a positive effect in small and big ways.

To my eye, if the pdf itself had a bit more visual integrity (ie; remove the jpeg distortion, font blurring [common problems with pdf's, I know]and line-spacing problems)there would be a better relationship between the design and the message, and then the proposed manifesto might be a little more provocative.
