300 Trailer

300.jpg

The trailer for WB’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300 is up and running on Apple Trailers. Check it out HERE. The movie was shot in a similar fashion to Miller’s SIN CITY, where actors were filmed against green screens and environments and other various elements were created in CG. The director Zack Snyder (2004′s DAWN OF THE DEAD) has a production blog set up HERE, complete with video journal entries and concept art.

Movie opens March 9th, 2007.

I already loved the visual style of SIN CITY, and I think I really will like this movie – since my mother is from Greece… :o)

Visually really stunning, and a great translation of the imagery in the comic—that gorgeous palette is due to the excellent color work of Lynn Varley. Admittedly its a comic I didn’t read—it seemed like a fairly straight forward ass-kicking story that didn’t interest me that much–but THIS looks interesting. I just hope the the soundtrack doesn’t rely on the synthesizer/hard rock guitar sound of the trailer. It doesn’t suit it.

Everything about this trailer was breath-taking. The visual style adds the perfect touch of passion and fantasy to the film. I also loved the use of Nine Inch Nails for the music. I really don’t think any other song could have made the trailer more perfect. I really look forward to seeing this movie.

I suppose the precedent for what I believe is a poor music choice, is the misplaced hard rock guitar in The Last Temptation of Christ. It also kind of dates the movie. The subject matter and art direction in this film is so timeless, i think the music detracts from it. This is Frank Miller’s Spartans, not Walter Hill’s Warriors.

I really liked Sin City the movie a lot, and for some reason whatever Frank Miller was trying to get across in the comics, came across better to me in the movie. Not just the imagery but the humor. The imagery in this one also appeals to me much more than the graphic novel ever did. That doesn’t mean that the graphic novel isn’t a good graphic novel—again, I haven’t read it—but maybe Miller is actually this great unsung art director for film. I’d love to see him do the art direction for a sci-fi epic or a Medieval drama or whatever else they let him do next.

That would be an interesting career choice for Miller — art direction. He pretty much knows his way around the frame in his graphic novels.
