A Comics Panel

Cartoonist Gordon McAlpin drew this comic version of a panel discussion he saw with Seth, Chris Ware, and Ivan Brunetti. It’s created in the style of Chris Ware’s comics, which is slightly ironic when it gets to the part about cartoonists developing their own style. And it fails slightly because it’s so obviously a quick-and-dirty digital approximation of how Ware would draw a strip and even with the precision of a computer, it’s sloppier than Ware’s hand-drawn masterpieces. But as Eric at the Fantagraphics blog said, his spare time is our gain, and it’s still a good read.

UPDATE: Not until it was pointed out to me did I realize how negative I sound above. Just wanted to make it clear that I really do like this comic because it really captures what it’s like to hear these guys speak in person, and my criticisms aren’t a dig at Gordon’s work, but rather an affirmation that there’s just something about the art of Chris Ware (and Seth and Brunetti) that just can’t be replicated.

    “fails slightly”
    “obviously a quick-and-dirty digital approximation”
    “it’s sloppier”

All in a single three-sentence paragraph.

I have never seen you rip on a featured artist/cartoonist before… Is this something you plan on doing regularly or was this some kind of special case?

I didn’t realize I sounded so negative… I certainly wasn’t “ripping” on him. If I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t have posted it. Nothing wrong with some criticism here, I hope.

I thought this was great. Gordon was using the style of who was talking, not just Chris’. I thought it was quite clever. It gave them each more of a voice.

Thanks for linking to this I got a lot out of reading it. I love those guys.

I was there at this panel discussion. Its unreal how much this guy captured. Its almost like it happened yesterday. He did a really good job, almost word for word. How he illustrated the talking is exactly how I pictured it when I was listening to them talk.

Also I had a friend ask a really embrassing question to the panel about he they felt about Manga, haha. Ivan just replys “thumbs up!” it was too funny, I Hope he adds that in that last part!
