A Little Background Info

gruesomesThis detail of Weirdly and Gobby Gruesome rocking out is from the 1965 Hanna Barbera LP ‘Monster Shindig’, painted by Ron Dias, a pretty fantastic background artist. His work on the painterly ’60′s era Disney Golden books is delightful. Can you believe it’s been over forty years since the Gruesomes first appeared on the Flintstones? They were designed by the incredible Iwao Takamoto, who seems to have had a creepy streak, as he’s most famous for the original ScoobyDoo designs. Me? I like his work on Atom Ant. As far as I know, Mr. Takamoto is in his eighties and still working.

    Nice!

    Weirdly: “I’m Weirdly. Weirdly Gruseome!”
    Fred: “You certainly are!”

He is indeed still working. Remind me to get into the animation biz to prolong my life. Oh wait – I already am! (Sorry about your inheritance kids, I’m here for quite a long while.) Great stuff, Jay. Thanks for posting.

  • Gobby

I just found (rescued) a stray cat with a messed up eye. The minute I saw him, I named him “Gobby” (for the gob of goo coming out of his eye). All I could think of when I found him was “Little Goblin” from the Flintsones. He is a loving little kitten with an unbelievable affection for people. I’m soooo happy I found him (despite $400.00 of Vet bills (and mounting) in the first week alone). The Vet thought I was nuts when I brought in a stray, told her his name was “Gobby” and said I wanted to save him. She put on the form “Stray”. Next time, the form will say “GOBBY!”. Rock on Gobby!
