Adobe Photoshop going online

photoshopbox-1.gif

CNET reports that Adobe Systems is releasing a free, ad-supported version of Photoshop online within six months.

“We are watching folks like Google do it in different categories, and we want to make sure that we are there before they are, in areas of our franchises,” said Adobe CEO, Bruce Chizen.

It looks like it’s high noon for online image editing – and it’s the illustrators and visual creatives who stand to benefit the most. I can’t count the times I’ve been on a remote terminal without Photoshop and felt completely useless as I tried to resize my image in MS Paint or whatever was at hand.

    Oh yes!
I absolutely agree! Imagemagick and netpbm can only do so much when photoshop can’t be found.

Good find, hopefully they’ll work in some type of collaborative workspace.

Good on Adobe for stepping up. I question the speed and power an online version will have with high-res, multi-layered documents, but this is a great first step, and it’s nice to see them beat Google to the punch (although if there were two brand-names that I almost shamelessly adore as user/consumer they are Google and Adobe).

Hmm, well if Oekaki boards are anything comparable, I know it is possible to implement layers and many other photoshop features into a java applet already.

I am excited to see what they come up with!
