Alex Hirsch: Off the Wall

We first met Alex Hirsch about a year ago when we posted a link to his fantastic student shorts. He’s just finished his latest and final student short for CalArts. It’s a departure from his previous works, but that’s not a bad thing by any means. Off the Wall maintains the irreverent tone of his first films and proves that great animation is the result of personality and heart as much as it is the product of great drawing skills.

I want more Wallby! (Oh good, there is more!)

i managed to go see a good amount of calart’s open show this year (it’s about 8 hours long so no, i didn’t stay for the whole thing) and this was one of the ones that stuck with me! it’s great. but there was another one called “zoo logic” by nicole mitchell that blew my mind. it looks like a vintage children’s book illustration and it’s impeccably animated and the story is hilarious. i can’t find it anywhere online but i wanted to mention her because i was so impressed.
