Alive in Joburg

From Neill Blomkamp, the director of the Citroën Transformer ad, comes an unsettling and eerie tale of a close encounter of the third kind in Johannesburg, South Africa. Watch Alive in Joburg (rather large quicktime file) for some great special effects. The discrimination of visitors from another world makes for an interesting allusion to Apartheid, and something like this is what War of the Worlds should have been like.

UPDATE: the file has been renamed. Try here!

UPDATE 2: The film is now at archive.org, where bandwidth won’t be a problem! Enjoy!!

I didn’t entirely get the analogy here… ? I’m sure it’s creators are against the apartheid, government & white settlers but it kind of correlates as the aliens being the poor and being the problem. I dunno? I don’t get it.

Joe, you’re right that it’s sort of in reverse. But I wasn’t implying that the film acts as a black-and-white metaphor (pun somewhat intended) for apartheid — merely a correlation. The comparison is unavoidable with a story that is essentially about one race being severely underprivileged at the hands of another, especially in South Africa.

Yea – it’s just odd that if you make the most obvious translation it becomes a metaphor for poor black South Africans being a scourge to society there.

Joe, you are putting words in my mouth. I never said that the film was analogous to South Africa’s history, but that it merely alluded to it. I was plenty careful when choosing my words. To say that this film has no relation to South African apartheid is ridiculous. (Besides, if anything the aliens in this film are the Dutch colonists, but with a twist that their invasion has failed).

awesome fx, boring story. Anytime someone has to ‘speak’ to confey a story and not show it visually, your in trouble. Some generic cliche scenes of alien motherships, military helicopters, mech robots…haven’t we seen this before? (well, maybe not with a shakey camera)..the use of overly-emotional music seems un-needed and cheap. I was laughing when that mob of people were running in slow motion at the end, this film was trying toooo hard to evoke emotion and a politcal message, instead of just relying on good narrative filmmaking.

Ouch Derek. But I do agree with you. I think the narration comments can apply to a lot of movies these days ( I would extend this to even most dialogue to be a crutch in movie making.). But sometimes for conveying a lot of scope and detail it is too tedious to do it the right way. I thought the short was interesting, primarily because of the footage of South Africans. Visually, the aliens were incorporated really well, but the whole movie left me with a taste for more.

You need to learn to read, dude. I said ‘YOU’ as in ‘anyone’ interpreting this movie. Not ‘YOU’ as in whoever the heck you are. I wasn’t responding to you directly, I was using a convention of the English language that allows YOU(as in anyone) to speak generally. So – no words in your mouth.

Joe, your argument above is pretty bad. You (And yes I do mean YOU) are hiding behind improper use of the english language to sidestep your own argument. If YOU did intend to convey “you” as “anyone” just go ahead and say so instead of attacking someone else for your own error.

And to the makers of this film, good job. Everyone’s a critic but some of us recognise originality and creativity when we see it.

Pointless as this may be, I think I’ll stand my ground here: there was no error on my part. Go back and read it.

I guess I just like to point out when people hyperventilate over nothing. I dunno why…

you = a person, any individual

My point about the movie was a good question to propose for discussion but instead, I get this stuff. Ahhh!(sobbing)

    Calgon take me away!

Joe, I misread your comment… I didn’t see the word “if”. Hope you can see how it reads without the “if”. Sorry for any hyperventilating.

The movie isnt an analogy to apartheid. Its not about black and white at all. The movie is about a very large problem in South Africa. It is about illegal aliens.

People crossing the borders into South Africa are a massive problem. As the ‘locals’ see it, the illegals cross over and take locals jobs, houseing, and other benifits that they are entitled to. When they cant get it, they take it, stealing electricity, and turning to crime.

This film just takes that concept and makes it very literal.
