America Elects a King

Berkey's ElvisIt’s the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, so let’s take a moment to look back a few years to a time when two illustrations were the topic of watercooler conversation. It was 1992, and the US Postal Service wanted to commemorate the life of Elvis.
Two images were presented and put to a vote. One depicted Elvis later in his career, seen here, and was painted by noted illustrator John Berkey. The second featured a younger Elvis and was painted by the equally revered Mark Stutzman.
If you don’t remember who won, that’s all right (mama), you can read more at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum site.
