American McGee’s Grimm

grimm.jpgI’ve only ever been vaguely aware of game designer American McGee and his twisted take on Lewis Carroll, American McGee’s Alice. The seemingly affected creepiness never did much for me, but I’m totally digging this small gallery of artwork for his upcoming video game take on the classic Grimm fairy tales. Looks like some sort of textured 2D/3D hybrid, and the cartoony look is a nice change of pace from Alice’s gloominess.

EDIT: Oops, totally forgot the link!

It might just be the palate on the German woodsman shown here, but it brings to mind the Twice Upon A Time character design

American McGee’s first game bearing his name, Alice, is the only one worth playing thus far. Scrapland was a cool idea with mediocre execution, and Bad Day LA, a game developed overseas by what sounded like slave labor if McGee’s blog is to be believed, was one of the biggest and most overhyped gaming jokes in recent memory. And what about OZ, the trilogy that got scrapped before it even got started? He’s still really hyped on that one…

Needless to say, awesome character design or not, I’m pretty skeptical when it comes to anything that has McGee’s name written all over it like it’s some kind of plus.
