André Carrilho

I love good caricature. There’s nothing worse than bad caricature, which is why I try to stay away from the whole thing when possible, because I can never really capture a likeness dead on. Lucky for Portuguese illustrator André Carrilho, he doesn’t have that problem — even with the most grotesque distortions, his caricatures retain instant recognition (see his Morrissey, par example).

André is a great caricaturist, a great export of my adopted home. He has an uncanny knack and is rightly one of the best known and best used illustrators here. Nice one, Johnny.

Just amazing, these are very, very stong likenesses, and I love the blending of photos and traditional rendering. I love it!

I’ll not argue against André’s enormous talent: he mastered Hirschfeld’s elegant inking and fearless approach to the subject together with a modern rendering. Each caricature is great taken one by one. But his gallery made me tired in the end. I wonder why?

I think it’s because he employs the same technique and the same use of light and shade in all his works (at least in this field), plus never inserting imagery to round a statement on the subject.

Maybe I’m of some kind of mediocre old school. But I never feel tired of opinionated caricaturists like Ian Pollock, Cuneo, Brodner, Ciardello (warercolorists all of them) or Burke (fauve). They feed my eyes and my mind endlessly.
