Animated Ed Harcourt video by Tom Gauld

I was excited to watch this video, after reading that it was animated by (or at least illustrated by and based on the style of) Tom Gauld, but I was disappointed. The faux-3D look doesn’t work for me, and the whole thing loses the simplicity and elegance of Tom’s comics work.

I did just pick up the printed-book version of Tom’s brilliant Hunter and Painter, however, and can’t recommend it enough.

I agree. His work is very wonderfully “flat” (which makes it a perfect match for Hunter and Painter); the 3D animation does not suit his style at all…

Personally, I prefer the hilarious and craptacular video David Shrigley made for Blur. It’s barely animated beyond rudimentary movement, yet it is perfectly synchronised with Shrigley’s art.
