Art Teacher’s Contract Terminated After Students See Nude Sculpture

An award-winning teacher in Dallas, Texas, has been made redundant after parents complained about a visit to a local art museum.

NBC reports, “the art teacher came under fire last April when she took 89 fifth-graders on a field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art. Parents raised concerns over the field trip after their children reported seeing a nude sculpture at the art museum.”

Notice the article is careful to not to say she was fired as a direct result of the incident.

This is how it starts. Soon you’ll have your Republican Gestapo having public book burnings of “undersirable” authors and raiding museams, destroying ‘entartete Kunst’ just like their predecessors did years back. Educated, enlightened Americans should stand up now before they wake one morning to find themselves living in a goverment imposed episode of ‘Leave it to Beaver’.

    Totalitarianism is a bitch.

That’s pretty bad you know. I could watch a kids tv show, that would have a popstar in a bikini girating like a stripper, so I’m sure for those kids seeing a naked sculpture is pretty tame. Art is a bit lefty and liberal though so maybe they thought they might see the sculpture and drop out of society, smoke weed, have pre-marital sex and become satan worshippers, it happens you know, he he. It’s strange that a nude sculpture still has the power to shock. I was in Penticton, Canada last year and saw a sculpture by a guy Michael Hermesh ( http://www.michaelhermesh.com ), it was placed in a roundabout in the city centre and was a nude, some crazy folk cut the penis off it. There’s an article about it here http://www.pentictonherald.ca/article_1738.php

I don’t get it. What is so offensive about nudity? And this is a statue- it’s “representational” nudity- it’s nothing more than someone’s concept carved in marble or whatever it was sculpted in. One would think (hope, actually), that by the 5th grade, most of those children would have seen at least one actual naked person.

There seems to be a great confusion in the US mixing up nudity with sexuality- probably because the only time we ever see nudity in the mass media there’s something sexual going on. As a result, all nudity in art has been turned taboo in our suburban communities. There is no longer a healty separation there and it’s very disturbing.

I’m an american currently living in Paris (France), and there are literally statues, paintings, and photos of nude people everywhere you look- and golly, thousands of children see them every day. Somehow this society continues to function.

It sounds like the pricipal was trying to find an excuse, any excuse, to remove that teacher (28 years is a long time to wait for someone you don’t like to leave).

What?? Don’t kids have to have their parents sign a permission slip to go to that thing? They knew where their kid was going and they bitched anyway. Then the school rolled over and dropped the teacher instead of doing what’s right.

I get tired of hearing about this thing being a “Republican” problem. It’s a problem caused by the collision of liberal and conservative views. You have ultra conservatives wanting to pull society back to the dark ages mixing with spineless liberals who won’t stand up for anything if it might cause a problem. In the end, individual rights get trampled.

    Shame.

There’s quite a bit more to the story than an art museum field trip gone wrong. It seems to be more a matter of personality conflicts and faculty/schoolboard politics rather than discrimination against nude sculpture. Check out the following article (quoted below) from the Frisco Enterprise, a Plano Star Community newspaper:

    http://www.planostar.com/articles/2006/09/25/frisco_enterprise/news/d-newsfri04.txt

“What has gotten lost here is the bottom line – this is not about a field trip, censorship, or a parent complaint. It is not about age, tenure, or salary level as has also been suggested in the media. This is about a school administrator working to help an employee improve her job performance and to improve the educational experience of students. Even if you have been working as a teacher for many years, there is opportunity for development. The teacher is working – she has not been suspended or on probation as has been reported in the media. The teacher asked for a transfer to another campus which was denied not because of any parent complaint about a field trip, but because allowing a teacher to transfer after receiving directives related to areas for improvement would weaken a supervisor’s ability to address performance issues by essentially giving the teacher an ‘escape hatch’ to avoid meeting the expectations of the supervisor.”

The headline’s misleading (see Tatiana’s comment). Her contract is not being renewed for the next term, and she’s still employed by the district. The non-renewal is NOT due to the art museum excursion complaint, but, according to the school district, a host of other issues that culminated in their choice. Further research of this story will show that the school district is NOT anti-art, anti-modern art, anti-NUDE art, prude, “puritanical” (speaking of, the Puritans were quite sensuaous people and not prudes at all), etc. Lots of shades of gray with this story.

“The non-renewal is NOT due to the art museum”
..none of the other issues have even been addressed till after her museum incident….she’s being slammed! I live in the Texas ‘bible belt’ & it is a left/right wing contradiction: you can’t have prayer or culture. The system has been neutered! The same parents who are worried about nudity in the museum are blindly letting their kids go on Myspace and get ‘seduced’.
…I wonder what this will do to the new school/museum tours?

it looks like its more about school politics than anything else, theres an unfortunate amount of dramma and back stabing that goes around in the school administrations, my mom used to be a public school teacher, she has alot of stories just like this one where teachers get screwed over because somewhere up the totem pole someone doesnt like them

    its wierd

I tried to make this clear in the OP: “Notice the article is careful to not to say she was fired as a direct result of the incident.”

Having said that, I thought it was post-worthy because there originally were complaints about the children seeing the nude sculptures; which, to me, seems, simply medieval.

The nude is the most common theme in art. How ignorant can some people be! We are teaching our children that our bodies are bad and ugly, its no wonder that they have such bad views of themselves.
