Artistic interpretations of literary characters

Rushdie by McKean

Steven Gettis asks some of comics’ greatest artists to render their favourite authors or literary characters. The result is a painting of Salman Rushdie by Dave McKean (above) and this extensive gallery.

Other contributions include:

Don Quixote by Will Eisner
Hercule Poirot by Ashley Wood
Pippi Longstocking by Derek Kirk Kim
Dracula by Mike Mignola

Fantastic gallery! I went through the whole thing. It was cool to see characters from some of my favorite books, too (Chronicles of Narnia, The Dark Tower series) as well as the famous authors and creators. Even Stan Lee was in there!

Great site! Some very interesting choices by the multitude of artists involved. Love how, in most cases, the artists’ style is echoed in the choice of author and/or character… suggesting that the influence of the work cited is always visible in the art. Even the choice of drawing a character instead of an author seems to fit with the various creator personalities.
