Ask Drawn!: Sports illustrators

Gemma writes:

I’m currently trying to research sports related illustrations, poster art and imagery. I was hoping you may be able to suggest relevant artists or books on the subject. I have been researching into the history, and am yet to find any current illustrators, but any input would be amazing.

If you have any suggestions, please comment!

One guy I’ve used over the years is Phill Flanders. GREAT old school, traditional media, tight caricature renderings. He doesn’t have a web site but you can reach him via hotmail.

If you wanna go old school, Jack Davis has done tons of sports related illustrations for the MLB, NFL, NBA, and his alma mata – the University of Georgia.

You can occasionally find some of those old books on ebay.

What about Robert Cunningham? I know he did lots of work for Sports Illustrated. Anyone know where I can find more of his work?

C.F. Payne is a HUGE sports junky. Has done loads of work for Sports Illustrated and there is a lot of sport subject matter in his Our America series for Reader’s Digest. Not to mention the kid’s books he’s illustrated like Casey at Bat, Mighty Jackie and Curse of the Bambino.
    Google him…

Heck, haven’t most of us done sports illustration at one time or another? I just finished a Charles Barkley piece and have a sports section on my site (www.kenmeyerjr.com). Great entries from everyone else, by the way.

Have you seen the sports mascot caricatures by Jim Harris? Nice detail and I'm pretty sure he's a Society of Illustrators Medal winner.
