I wasn't sure what was going on precisely, but it was compelling enough visually that I didn't need to. The synopsis on the short's site was somewhat elucidating, "When a hungry astronomer falls asleep while working on a problem, he finds the solution not in outer space, but in the surreal food chain of his subconscious mind." I kind of vaguely felt a Mayan influence in the character design although I am not that familiar with the subject. Regardless, I am a fan of surreal stream of consciousness stuff. It should be fun.
