Behind Google’s illustrated logos

CNN has an article about Dennis Hwang, the otherwise-anonymous creator of all the wacky variants of the Google logo you see pop up on holidays and special dates. See some of the variants here. Google has an absolutely hideous logo, so it’s always somewhat nice to see some illustrative flourishes distract from its ugliness.

Your right, the Google logo is awful but well I guess the fact that if you have enough money you can make anything work :P Its nice to see whos behind the periodic art. To bad about the Miro trouble, was and still a ridiculous complaint. :

I like the logo. I don’t think it’s hideous at all. What’s not to like? It’s bold, it’s colourful and instantly reconisable. I also think a logo is only as good as the service behind it and since I know what I’m gettting when I do a google, trhe logo’s fine and reassuring.

Michael, I think you’re confusing recognizablity and familiarity with quality. Just because a logo is associated with a great service doesn’t make it good. Weak font, rainbow colours, drop shadows and bevelled edges do not a quality logo make.

For instance, why are the two “g”s blue but the two “o”s red and yellow?

Google doesn’t have a logo, it has a word mark.

Johnny, I’m not confused at all. I like the logo and I like the service behind it.

    Blue…good. Red…good. Yellow…good. Green…good. The sheer simplicity and non pretentiousness , good. Service… brilliant.

this link was posted so we could all appreciate Hwang’s work-which, by the way, is GREAT! His variations on the theme are right on, and his homages to artists and scientist are frankly great. Miro’s family was silly not to understand that this was a great way for millions of ignorant people who google to learn about his work, maybe google him, maybe buy a poster? i mean who whines about free advertising? whatever. Google’s logo might be just too simple and plain and blaaah BUT BUT BUT Hwang’s workl is great.
