Boba Fett gets digitally inked

I don’t think I’ve ever read Penny Arcade, but I do like the strip’s cartooning, and this is a pretty slick video of Mike “Gabe” Krahulik digitally inking a drawing of Boba Fett.

just so I get it right – he’s using photoshop and a tablet? I use photoshop daily for hours but never would get such nice straight lines with a mouse.

Nice video, makes me wish I could draw…

It’s amazing this video, really a great help to see how other artists work at their craft.

Awesome! It looks so easy, but it aint.

Why didn’t they use the Kleptones’ A Night at the Hip Hopera instead of that 50 Cent dreck??

The sound simply doesnt fit. How about some Star Wars tunes?

I’m pretty confident he is using Adobe Illustrator. You can get really great, smooth lines in that program using a tablet and the brush tool while maintaining decent line quality.

And man, that was some good mash up, those Queen tracks were far better than the original beats for that 50 cent album.

Nope he’s using Photoshop – he’s mentioned that over the years. It’s a shame he doesn’t use Illustrator or even better the old Mac version of Expression. It’d be far easier to edit vector rather than get those lines perfect everytime with the added benefit of having scalable art – mind you it looks like he got it perfected anyways :)

Vector art can look a little cold and too perfect. It sometimes suffers from people thinking “oh, the computer did it”

This has a great natural feel, with the convenience of being able to clean up digitally.

    Also, the soundtrack rocked. :)

One of the things that helped me when using a tablet is to slide a piece of paper between the tablet and pen. It gives me more of a natural feel. The added friction gives me more control over the pan so that I can draw better lines. Also, when working in Photoshop, if I hold the shift key down you can draw straight lines.

I also think in photoshop you can adust the fidelity of the brush tool to make the lines less shaky.

I prefer digitally inking with custom brushes in Illustrator. It’s easier to control the smoothness if you want to make lines a touch smoother without them getting too perfect. Plus you get the advantage of being able to resize the image without any hit to the quality.
