With Halloween a few weeks away, I thought I’d recommend a beautifully illustrated children’s book that has become a seasonal favorite in my home: the Ghost of Nicholas Greebe, by Tony Johnston and illustrated by S.D. Schindler.
It’s the hauntingly funny story of a pilfered bone that brings unrest to the deceased Master Greebe (see the boneless limb in the cover illustration above?). The tale follows the circuitous journey of the bone from grave to icy depths and back again.
The illustrations are wonderfully detailed pen and ink drawings with perfectly moody color. S.D. Schindler has a style that reminds me a bit of Aurelius Battaglia with lots of extra detail. His illustrations for the Story of Salt are also wonderful.
Nicholas Greebe is apparently out of print, but readily and inexpensively available online.
