Brian Cronin

brian cronin Brian Cronin has a wonderful printmaking style to his illustrations, with some elegant color choices and the occasional visual pun. His recent work has more detailed linework than his archived work, but it’s a nice progression. I like it.

Brian Cronins work always serves to inspire me. I was first drawn by his sparse, deceptively simple line work that was coupled with his highly conceptual ideas. For a while his work was appearing in the Atlantic Monthly every couple of months with mutiple large illlustrations for whatever article he was accompanying. Too bad they went and redesigned the magazine. Those were the days. Now if only I could afford a Gicleé.

It reminds me of this old German children’s book I used to have full of German nursery rhymes. Ahhhh…. good times.

He is such a great distinctive style. I enjoy how he can keep it fresh even though he’s had very little progression over the years. My only beef would be with the many people who seem to be ripping him off lately… you know who that is.

Cronin’s work is brilliant, I’m glad to see him on your site. His aesthetic is sublime, but the way he communicates his ideas is so imaginative and fantastic–it kills. I’d also like to echo the sentiments expressed by Jamie, the tradition of shamelessly ripping-off true talent in the illustration world is all too, uh, traditional.

If there’s one thing I hate more than JavaScript bombs that full-screen the browser window, it’s sites done entirely in Flash. Flash is so hellishly rotten I don’t even have it installed for Firefox; gotta rev up IE for that. So we start IE and… OK! Great! A perfect Graphics Idiot Trifecta: He requires a newer version of Flash than I’ve got. What a moron. I’m not going to waste any time downloading a new plug-in for somebody who already deliberately and gratuitously shat on me twice. I’ll bet you anything it’s just a bunch of still images and the exact same design could’ve been done more quickly, easily, and usably with plain HTML.

What’s the deal with graphics people? Why can’t they just put in the effort to understand the goddamn medium they’re working in? Too lazy? Too dumb? Too arrogant? All three, I suppose. You people have no idea how desperately stupid you look to anybody with a clue.

Brian Cronin has a great style, very elegant with something of Art Deco style. (via Drawn!)…

Hey there “a” your last name must be “hole”. You could have upgraded 15 computers with flash in the time it took you write that little opinion of yours.

Brian’s stuff is great! It’s no wonder they used him within the definition of illustrator in the world’s largest online encyclopedia, wikipedia!

The thing about ripping Cronin off is that you have to have his brain to do that. There were and still are many people that replicate what Norman Rockwell and Andy Warhol have done in the past but there’s only one Rockwell, only one Warhol and there’s only one Brian Cronin.

Never understood getting bent out of shape over style inspiration, aka “ripping off”. We’re all influenced but in the end it’s the artist’s brain that is the style. All of his experiences in life drive his brush and no one person will be able to steal that. It’s the little details that make the big picture.

And “a” I feel ya on the site being in flash but I can assure you if you stop using the 1985 computer you have and upgrade to something that doesn’t have a green screen then it’s definitely worth it and pretty user friendly. Good luck with that.
