Canadian Design Resource

Design: Gordon Duern and Keith McQuarrie
Manufacturer: Electrohome, Kitchener, ON

The Canadian Design Resource has quickly become one of my favourite weekly stops when looking for design inspiration. The bloggers – whose mission is to “expose and nurture the material culture of Canada” – highlight design innovations such as this dragon boat by Simon River Boats, the NFB logo by Georges Beaupré, bagged milk (of course) by Various, and even the McIntosh Red apple by John McIntosh of Dundas County, Ontario.

From the looks of the site, Canada’s design hey-day was back in the 70s. Or maybe it just takes 30 years for Canadians to acknowledge when we’ve done something worthwhile. Well, whatever the case, don’t wait too long to check out this site – it rocks.

(Oh, and, by the way, I actually have one of those Apollo record players in my apartment; I had no idea it was born in Kitchener. It sounds as good as it looks, eh?).

I’m fairly certain we had one of those too. Though without the swank speakers. I had no idea that Electrohome was a Kitchener company either… and I even grew up there!

I skimmed the first page there and realized quickly that the bulk of the posts and information there was posted by OCAD people. Off the top of my head I recall at least one post by Greg Durrell, a student at OCAD and a grip of posts by Todd Falkowski, a faculty member at the college.

Not surprising since conversation with anyone in the design department at OCAD usually devolves into a critique. If an OCAD student can see it, it’s fair game. No typography will go uncriticized!

It’s nice to see them collecting the positive examples, though.

    Hi Matt,

I have an Apollo as well but I can’t find speakers with the correct inputs. Where did you find your speakers? Thanks,

    Andrew
