Claire Wendling

Jon sends in a link to Claire Wendling, and has this to say about her:

she’s got an elegant, animated style which recalls Schiele by way of anime in her illustration work and a very toothsome line in her story-telling work. I’m very excited to share this artist’s work, I’m going to be following her output very closely …

    I’ve had wendling on the mind for about 2 years now. I highly recommend picking up iguana bay2.0 and Drawers 2. They are outstanding and give a glimse of her process and finish. She is within the top 5 illustrators, in my humble opinion.

    She is one of my all time favourite artists without doubt. It was after admiring her work that a group of us coined the term DESPIRING (Which is when an artist is so inspiring that you get depressed at your own lack of talent afterwards..)

    the stylization of her figures is amazing. she truly edits in ways that i haven’t seen. i am stunned how so few lines can create so much mood, expression, and fluidity of the human form. we can all learn wonders from this woman.

    Sheridan College animators like myself take alot of inspiration from the mood, style and expression in her drawing. Its curvy contours and precise line quality give it flow and consequently an interesting figure. She has many fans at Sheridan, very impressive work

    I’m crazy about her work as well. I overheard someone talking about her in an art class, showing off one of the books and I was hooked.

    I’ve been trying to get more of Claire’s work but even living in Europe (near the Saar region in Germany which is right next to the region of Lorraine France) is no gaurantee that her books are readily available. I have three collection of her work (Iguana Bay, Drawers and Drawers 2.0) and her work in Aphrodite Vol.3 is gorgeous. I use her work among my other samples of artists for my drawing instruction classes.
    Another artist in her vein is another French individual by the name of Mathieu Lauffray. In fact their work is similar enough (while not being a duplicate of each other) that they’ve worked together on occasion. I very highly recommend a graphic novel released by Humanoids Publishing titled ” Ante Genesem: the Prophet ” featuring a story he’s created and illustrated with the script provided by Xavier Dorison.
