Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings and Arf Forum

Craig Yoe’s Arf series of books is like getting a little treasure chest of cartoon goodies with each volume. Book 3 in the series is Arf Forum. Like its predecessors, it’s filled with all sorts of rarely-seen comic and cartoon illustration. A particular treat is the book’s opening section devoted to vintage images of people reading comics — celebrities, magazine cover illustrations, and comic characters themselves. Plus: 19th century engravings, horror comic book covers, pre-Flintstone caveman funnies, and more. These books are fun, and the Arf Lovers Blog tells me Book 4, Comic Arf is already nearing release.

Also fun is Craig’s collection of Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings. The cover actually makes the contents of the book seem more torrid than they actually are. Inside you’ll find all kinds of naughty (but rarely lewd) drawings by cartoonists not known for being particularly titillating: Syd Hoff, Al Jaffee, Ernie Bushmiller, Johnny Hart, Walt Kelly, Carl Barks, Chuck Jones, and plenty more. There are even nude self-portraits (seriously!) by Will Eisner and Charles Schulz. HAWT.

    Hey! I was thinking about purchasing some of the books you’ve written about but during a crash of my computer I lost all the super-bookmarks I had.

    I was wondering if you would make a post about some of your favorite books, or if not favorite, some really good ones. I love cartoons, and especially the ones you write about!

    The reading girl is just amazing. You can “feel” her flesh, it has an earthly quality to it. It is to the ordinary pin-up like a Rubens to the classical ideal. Me likes (me drools, also, but let’s try to remain out of the gutter :))
