Cory Kruger, tattoo artist

I must confess I let out a mental groan when I saw a link suggestion for a tattoo artist. Sadly, it seems a lot of tattoo art is cliched and redundant and repetetive and trite. If I saw one unicorn or airbrushed head of a girlfriend, I would have closed my browser and never looked back.

Fortunately, Cory Kruger plays to a different beat. Innovative subject matter, strong, vibrant palettes and a sleek design sense. Many of these compositions could easily be concept art for films. Don’t forget to check out his sketchbook.

[Link - Thanks, Bruce!]

I know what you mean with the initial reaction. I used to feel the same way, ten years ago.

Groaning when you hear the word “tattoo” is a lot like making the gasface when you hear the word “film”. Sure, there are a lot of “Ghost Dad”s and “Battlefield Earth”s, but there are also quite a few “To Kill a Mockingbird”s and “Pootie Tang”s out there.

Amazing artists like Corey, Guy Aitchison, Filip Leu, Grime, Joe Leonard, Tin Tin, Anil Gupta, Aaron Cain, Randy Muller, Paul Booth, Adrian Lee, and so many others, who will knock your socks off.

Skin is really just another medium, and a damned tricky one at that. If you think drawing on paper is hard, try doing it on a canvas that moves, sweats, complains, and needs to take smoke breaks! ‘Nuff said!

I think tattoos can me cool… but only when they have ACTUAL meaning to that person.

My sister, for example, got a tattoo on her wrist after her cat of like 6 years died. It’s a special symbol that only makes sense to her. Or like when all the hobbits from the Lord of the Rings movies got some nice elvish qwenya tattooed to their feet. That was the bomb. But I throw up every time I see a fairy or a butterfly.

Don’t forget: people are CHOOSING which tattoos to get. It is not necessarily the artists’ fault that so many people want tattoos of unicorns or Taz.

There are only three folks I’d consider inking me if I was so inclined to do so:
Jason Goad, Mike Giant, and Seen.

johnny – hilarious tattoo site. probably the equivalent of all the silly t-shirts asians wear with ‘engrish’ mistakes all over them… well, perhaps, not equivalent since this is being permanently branded onto someone’s body.

and, yes bruce, point taken. all media suffer from mediocrity in the mainstream; comics + movies are certainly not exempt.

Cory Kruger has quickly become one of my favorite tattooists. On my list, he’s right up there with all the greats: Filip Leu, Horiyoshi III, Roberto Hernandez, Mike Rubendall, etc. As a tattooist, I admire such fluid, consistent, and clean work. Long live the Japanese tattoo!

This site will be of interest to anyone who loves good tattooing. I think Troy Denning is one of the best and most professional tattooers out there – he’s not just some kid. His shop is also the best, most unique tattoo shop out there.

Serena, that is a very cool site. Thanks! Next time I’m in NYC I will definitely stop in if not to get a tattoo but at least to check out the art gallery. Very cool indeed, not your typical tattoo studio.

This looks like a mixture of old/modern chinese or japanese style tattoos. In order to get colors that bright that would require High Qualitytattoo ink.

What about the new encapsulated tattoo inks?
I haven’t seen any in actual use yet but I think
in theory they should be able to produce brighter
colors. Not only that but the tattoo removalis
    a quick laser shot.
